How to use a monitor with plug-in solar
- Measure your baseline for a week before buying panels. Look at the lowest sustained daytime draw. That's what your solar can offset without exporting.
- Identify flexible loads. Dishwashers, laundry, dehumidifiers, pool pumps and EV charging can often move to midday.
- Install your system, then compare. Production that exceeds your midday load is going back to the grid without credit.
- Shift loads and re-check. A few scheduled smart plugs can raise self-consumption noticeably.
- Decide on storage with data. If you consistently export a lot at midday, a plug-in battery or power station may pay off; if not, skip it.
Can a smart plug measure my solar production?
Sometimes, but be careful. Most smart plugs are designed to measure current flowing to a load. A plug-in solar system pushes current the other way, and many plugs either won't report it or will report it incorrectly. More importantly, you shouldn't put your solar inverter's plug through an ordinary smart plug unless the manufacturer explicitly supports it, since you'd be adding a relay and contacts into a generating circuit. The microinverter's own app, or a CT monitor with bidirectional support, is the right tool for production data.
Reading the data: what "good" looks like
Once your monitor has a couple of weeks of data, look for three patterns. First, the overnight floor: the lowest steady draw between midnight and 5 a.m. is your always-on load (fridge, router, standby electronics, HVAC fans). That's the load solar can never offset without storage. Second, the midday floor: the lowest draw between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. on a typical weekday. If that number is well below your plug-in system's output, you'll export a lot of energy for free. Third, spikes: short, large loads like a kettle, a hair dryer or a microwave. Solar can help with these a little, but they're mostly supplied by the grid because they exceed a plug-in system's output.
The practical goal is to raise the midday floor with loads you'd run anyway. Scheduling the dishwasher, a dehumidifier, a pool pump or EV charging into sunny hours often matters more than adding another panel.
Privacy and cloud dependence
Whole-home monitors record a detailed picture of when you're home, asleep or away. Read the privacy policy, check whether data can be exported or deleted, and prefer products with local access if that matters to you. Cloud-only devices can also lose features if the company changes its service, so local integrations are a meaningful plus for long-term owners.
